My new mug started its life as a lowly orange coffee mug that I bought at Dollar Tree for a whopping $1. With the addition of a vinyl decal that I created with my Silhouette Cameo and a hand-lettered cut file I designed, my mug is now all kinds of fabulous. Keep reading to for the how-to...
To make your own "Prayer and Pumpkin Spice" mug, you'll need a few supplies. Supplies:
- Mug
- Permanent Vinyl
- Transfer Tape
- Silhouette Cameo
- Weeding Tool--I use a die pick, and it works great!
First, you'll need to download the FREE hand-lettered "Livin' on Prayer & Pumpkin Spice" Cut File. (The file is for personal use only please!) I'm sharing the Silhouette Studio file since I have a Cameo, but I'm also sharing the SVG file for those of you who have a Cricut.

Once you've downloaded the file, open it using Silhouette Studio. Size the design to fit your mug and cut it from vinyl using your Silhouette Cameo. You can see the cut settings I used for my vinyl, but remember to always do a test cut first to be sure that your selected settings work for the material you're using.
Once you've cut your design, weed the excess vinyl from around it. Using a weeding tool or even a straight pin makes this process so much easier.
Once your design is weeded, cover it with a piece of transfer tape. To make applying the vinyl decal to a mug easier, cut closely around the decal with scissors and cut slits in the design wherever possible. Also, clean the surface of your mug with alcohol to ensure that your decal will stick well.
Next, remove the paper backing from your decal and apply it to your mug. My "trick" for doing this is to tear a small strip of the paper backing from the middle of the design. I fold the edges of the paper that's left so that it creates just enough height so that I can center my design easily without it sticking. Once I get the placement right, I stick the design down in the middle. I then slowly peel the paper backing away and carefully rub the design down from the middle outward until I reach the edge of the design. I learned this way of adhering designs on a curved surface a few years ago from a YouTube video, and it does the trick almost every time.
Once you get the design adhered well, remove the transfer tape and your mug is finished.
I just love this mug! It's so perfect for fall when everyone seems to be living on pumpkin spice flavored everything!
