Handmade Mason Jar Shaker Card
Hey, y'all! If you've been following my blog for a while, you know that I LOVE all things sparkly. I've recently seen some different crafters make shaker cards--cards with a clear window housing sequins and glitter and other bits and bobs that sparkle like nobody's business when you shake them. I have been dying to try making one myself. When I looked through my newest Sizzix dies, I saw the mason jar Bigz die just screaming to be made into a shaker, so today I'm going to show you how I made my sparkly shaker card dreams come true!
Make one of these cards to put in your journaling Bible or gift one to a friend who is in need of a little joyful sparkle in her life! You'll be surprised how easy these are to make.
Of course, you'll need a few supplies to get started. I'm going to list them below and include affiliate links. (That's just a fancy way of saying if you purchase anything through one of the links, your purchase will help support my blog at no extra charge to you. Thanks, friends!)
Supplies:
To begin making the shaker card, first cut the mason jar from paper. Place a piece of paper over the Bigz jar die. Sandwich that between a pair of standard size cutting pads and roll through your Sizzix BIGkick. Repeat the steps to cut another lid and jar from a coordinating piece of scrapbook paper so that you can mix and match the pieces. (Or simply use the Sizzix Fox Tales Paper Pad, which has double sided pages that coordinate well with one another.)
Once the pieces of your jar are cut, it's time to stamp the jar. I used the Sizzix Clear Alphabet Stamps, along with a few other stamps sets I had on hand. I stamped using StazOn ink, and I gave my letters a yellow shadow using a marker. Notice that I stamped the phrase a little higher than you would expect because I didn't want it to be covered up with all the sparkles I planned to put in the shaker card later.
Next, place the stamped jar into a clear page protector. (I used the no-glare kind, but I'm sure the other kind would work as well.) Use a sewing machine to sew around the sides and bottom of the jar. Do NOT sew the top of the jar closed or you won't be able to fill it with sparkly goodness!
Cut around the jar to remove the excess page protector. Then fill the jar with sequins, micro beads, chunky glitter, and even the little hearts you cut with the die earlier. Place the jar lid over the top of the jar and sew around the lid to close up the jar.
If you'd like to add a little extra dimension to the jar, punch holes in the jar lid and add rivets using a Crop-A-Dile. Thread twine through the rivets and tie a bow.
And that's it! Well, all except the shaking, which is definitely the most fun thing about this card.
Mail one of these to a friend who needs a little encouragement.
Use one of these as a bookmark or even use washi to tape one in your journaling Bible. I love that you could use this tutorial to create all different kinds of shaker cards.
If you make one yourself, I would love to see! Share it on my Facebook page or tag me on Instagram so that I can see your version.
