{New Year Knock Off Plate}

Hey, y'all!  How are you?  It seems like forever since I last posted.  I've been enjoying my time off from school with my hubby and family.  I had a wonderful Christmas, and I'm looking forward to a new year!  Whenever a new year rolls around, there's one thing I always have: hope.  Hope that a new year will bring with it the fulfillment of dreams that I've held on to for a long time.  In honor of that, I'm sharing a super easy tutorial with you today.
This week I just happened to catch a snippet of a segment on Kathy Lee and Hoda where these plates were featured.
PPD Holiday Serveware from Bloomingdale's
When I saw these on my T.V. screen, I immediately found them online and knew I could easily make my own.  I doubt they were too very expensive (they appear to be sold out on the website now), but I knew I could make one for less.  All I did was buy two metallic Elmer's paint markers and a dollar store white plate.  (I barely used any of the paint markers for this project, so I have them to use on another project.)
I thought this plate was perfect with the gold rim when I saw it at the dollar store!  Now, I must start off by telling you that these pen paints will not be permanent on your plate.  (You can get all the deets on the pens from Craft Test Dummies review {HERE}.)  This will be more of a decor piece, but if you want something permanent, they sell pens specially made for ceramic dishes at the craft store that, when heated in the oven, will be permanent.  Or you could always try the sharpie technique that A Beautiful Mess used on ceramic mugs {HERE}.  My Walmart didn't have gold sharpies, and I live 45 minutes from a craft store, so I just used the Elmer's markers.  I looked at the inspiration plate on my phone and used the gold marker to write on the plate first.
It's VERY obvious that I hardly ever write in cursive because the bottom of the p is backward.  (That was a head-slap moment.)  Because the pens aren't permanent, I just scraped the bottom of the letter off with my fingernail and did it over.  I used the silver marker to complete the design and that was it, ladies!
This was probably the easiest project I've ever done.  Seriously.  I love the combination of the silver and gold.  According to Home Stories A to Z's post on 2013's decor trends, metallics are in, so this plate is perfect for the new year!
And you know what?  We all could use a little more hope in our lives.  I hope you and your family have a wonderful end to 2012 and an even better 2013!

  5. Hey your plates are great. Could put whatever means most to anybody. Make a great arrangement on wall with them. So easy and inexpensive, love, love your project. That's the kind of project I am loving to make and can afford.
    I too live a ways from a craft store and depending on weather I don't venture to it unless I feel safe. Luckily there is a Family $ about 5 miles away where I could get plates and maybe even the markers.
    Glad to hear you/your family had great Christmas and wishing you Happy New Year. What does your family do for that night? Whatever it is hope it's safe for you but also fun.
    We'll be staying home but we used to hit the movies on n.y. eve then get breakfast later. That's when we lived in San Diego area, when we moved to MT it was too dangerous to go out as we lived really far from everything and the roads were pretty bad with ice/snow, with elk and other critters running around. When we lived in KY (after Mt) we stayed home as the county we lived in was dry and lived too far from Bowling Green. Now we live in Grand Junction, CO area but we're west of there a ways so just stay home. We could go to a bar in small town close by but the police station is right across street from the bar, why bother?lol so we just stay home.

  8. Wow, this turned out so pretty! I snatched up a porcelain marker some weeks ago with some projects in mind, but never quite got around to do any of them. Love your idea, hope I can make something that is half as pretty as your plates! =)
