Hi, everyone! This week's challenge at The CSI Project is to create a knock off. I looked at several different online stores to find something to create for the challenge. I stumbled upon the Sentiment Canvas Collection from Pottery Barn Kids.

I love all the canvases, but I chose to "knock off" the swallow canvas. So here's what I did to create my knock off. It was super easy and super inexpensive-- a great combination!
I love all the canvases, but I chose to "knock off" the swallow canvas. So here's what I did to create my knock off. It was super easy and super inexpensive-- a great combination!
First, I pulled a canvas out of my canvas stash. Unfortunately, I didn't have a square canvas, and the closest craft store to my house is a 45 minute drive, so I just worked with what I had. I used my Silhouette to cut a swallow from white card stock.
I painted my canvas with the tan paint. I only used one coat because, to me, the PB canvas almost looks like burlap. The texture of my canvas shows through the thin coat of paint, creating a burlap texture. I then taped off my canvas with painters tape to create the lines around the edge of the canvas.
I used my stencil brush to paint between the tape. The photo of the stencil in progress shows me using white paint. This was before I realized the PB art has pink lines....so I repainted the lines pink.
Here is where I had to use my noggin! To create the flowers in the corners of the canvas, I first traced a flower I had cut with my Silhouette. I filled in the traced flower with pink paint.
I used the end of an unsharpened pencil to create the circles for the smaller flowers.
I used the small end of a small paintbrush to create the centers of the flowers. I used the end of a straight pin to create the dots around the center of the large flower. And, finally, I painted the white edge around the large flower with a small paint brush. It's not perfect, but I will have to accept that and move on with my life.
The finishing touch was applying my paper swallow to the canvas with Mod Podge. I also used two coats of Mod Podge to seal the canvas.
Then I had a PB Kids knock off!
Besides the fact that it's not square, I think it looks pretty darn close to the original! :)
Beautiful knock off! Thanks for stopping by my blog and commenting on my driftwood mirror. Anytime you're in the Seattle area, look me up. I've got plenty of driftwood!!!

ReplyDeleteYou did a great job on this project! Thank you for showing me what to do with all my blank canvases!
ReplyDeleteI like the burlap look too and the swallow. I'll have to change this project for a little boys room. Any ideas to replace the swallow?
ReplyDeleteWhen I did one for my friends little boys we did different shapes of trucks. You could also do dinosaurs, sports, bugs, construction, airplanes, anything that he is into you can make a theme about it! You just have to pick ones with interesting silhouettes.
